Go take a Trash Bag Hike

Posted by columbusdad on April 22, 2009

Support the Leave No Child INSIDE initiative by taking your kid on a hike today. Columbus has an outstanding Metro Park system that has miles and miles of hiking and biking trails or if you can’t get to a Metro Park, find a local park or playground and take your kids to play. Another option is to check out the Central Ohio Greenways website for a trail near you.

While you are out enjoying the beautiful weather teach your kid about taking care of the environment by bringing a trash bag with you and picking up trash on your hike or while you play.

Jello Squash Gardening

Posted by columbusdad on April 20, 2009

So we finally got around to planting our zucchini seeds in jello.  I am not sure the kids understood what we were doing but they were still pretty excited about it. I hope it works and that the seeds germinate. The bag said it should take about a week.

Has anyone ever done this before? I am not sure what to do once the seeds start to grow.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the project.

Mini Gardening with the Kids

Posted by columbusdad on April 18, 2009

I needed to get a new battery for the mower so we ran out to Straders and decided that we would get some tomatoes.  I thought it would be a fun project for the boys this summer.

The boys had fun riding around on the cart, especially when we walked thru the rain inside one of the greenhouses.

The boys were pretty excited about helping out. Heath I think was more interested in playing in the dirt

I got out some compost from the bin – after stirring it up for the first time in 3 or 4 months. Then I put the boys to work mixing the compost with the potting soil.

Finally the boys planted the tomatoes in the pots.

I also decided to try an experiment that I had read about. I made some jello in clear cups and I am going to have the boys plant some seeds in the jello. In theory the seeds should germinate and we should be able to watch the root system develop and the plant start to form.  The jello is setting up tonight. I will have them plant it tomorrow.
